On Oct.19, CBC held its seventh annual hymn service. Junior Drew Blacksmith, who participated in the hymn service, said it is important to learn about all music and to see the truth within the texts.
“It is encouraging to sing these hymns,” said Blacksmith “Music is a great way to minister to people. It can speak to anyone.”
Earl Johnson, associate professor of the music department and director of the hymn services, said that this year’s performance was chosen from a selection of 20th-century hymns. Johnson said he chose this selection because the hymns are used by many different denominations. He said he encourages people attending the service to worship God through hymns that may be outside of their own worship tradition.
“Singing hymns in a variety of musical styles from all historical periods, ‘ties’ Christians into the worshipping community from ages past and into the future,” said Johnson. Stephen Raines, assistant professor of history and political science, said he liked the fact that there were Native American hymns, Jamaican hymns and some of the old texts with new tunes within the service.
“I have been going to the hymn service for years, and I told Johnson I think this is the best one he has ever done,” said Raines. He said he enjoyed the variety of instruments used this year, but, above all, appreciated how Johnson began the service with a simple statement.
“This is not entertainment, this is a worship service,” said Johnson.
